Football's fearsome fan

Ethel Treagus is a woman of

passion, a

deep-seated love of her family being primary among them. There is

something

else that gets her pulse racing though, and that is her love of

football.

On the eve of the Football World

Cup and Ethel

is not too hopeful about the England team's chances of making it to the

final

after a dismal warm-up match earlier in the week.

Ethel is also a Lewes FC

stalwart and can

be found at every home match in the frontline relieving match goers of

their

money in return for a 'Golden Goal' ticket, a task that other family

members

have been roped in for. And one family member has a permanent place on

the

pitch. The ashes of Gordon, Ethel's late-husband, are buried under the

centre-circle.

Gordon played for the club in

his youth and

it is there that the couple met (in spite of the fact they actually

lived

opposite one-another on Evelyn Road).

Ethel has seen support for the

Rook's ebb

and flow over the years but has remained resolute in her support through

it

all, never missing an opportunity to come up with fundraising ideas.

Beware though, behind that

familiar, cheery

smile lies a fearsome football fan, who is counting down the days until

the new

season. You have been warned.
