Snow trouble on School Hill

Travel chaos yet again hit Lewes on Saturday after 4cm of the white stuff fell in the morning.

Chickens in the snow, Lewes
And for once, one of the primary problems was not the trains (as has been the case in recent weeks) but School Hill where a Countryliner bus broke down causing tailbacks and frustration for those trying to finish their Christmas shopping. Matters were even worse at nearby Gatwick Airport where some flights were cancelled until – at least – late afternoon on the busiest travel day of the month.
School Hill, being so steep, has a history of making drivers fall foul of the icy conditions, even the police have been forced, previously, to abandon their vehicles half way up the street. Two years ago – when living up the High Street I was woken at 5am by some coppers in need of tea, warmth and rescue – I could not offer the latter one but gave the other two in abundance.
All-in-all, with accidents on the A27, events for this evening being cancelled and some in town not ‘opening up shop’, combined with a number of ambulances spotted aiding residents this morning, I think the advice would be to stay in, keep warm and leave the emergency services to do their work without risking their lives.
