An invitation to Labour supporters

With just a week to go until the chance to vote for change Lewes Green Party would like to extend an open invitation to Labour supporters in Lewes: come and join us. Lots of Labour and Lib Dem supporters around the country are finding their natural home in the Green Party, and speaking to many people in Lewes including some Labour party members, we find many of you are already going to vote Green. Our guiding principle of “fairness is worth fighting for” strikes a chord with many in Lewes just as it does in Brighton where Caroline Lucas MP is so popular – that’s why this election looks set to see more first-time Green voters in Lewes than any other election.

Labour:

• led us into foreign wars
• failed to stop bus and rail fares becoming unaffordable to many
• failed to stop the increase in the rich and poor gap
• failed to regulate the banks
• failed to stop house prices sprialling out of control
• gave us many of the economic challenges that devastate communities today
• gave us PFI and the creeping privatisation of the NHS
• gave us tuition fees and the end of free education for all
• was led by a man who saw himself as the heir to Thatcher

And nothing is changing. The Labour Party says cuts in the public sector are inevitable. In fact, their agenda is bigger cuts than anything seen since the 1970′s according to The Independent newspaper, and Labour run councils are making some of the harshest job cuts in the whole of England and Wales. Meanwhile locally, a recent report on changes to council tax benefit said Labour in Lewes “did not understand what the issue was” (http://hbhelp.co.uk/theangryclaimant/?p=56).

The Green Party is the only alternative left locally and nationally. We say tax the bankers and have proved there are alternatives that work - not in talk, but in practice. Green councillors are making changes for the better in all the communities they are elected to represent while nationally Caroline Lucas MP, Jenny Jones MEP, Darren Johnson and more are showing the benefit of having politicians who can say the truth, not what a spin merchant like Peter Mandelson tells them to say.

We challenge everyone to look at our policies and find a single one that wouldn’t benefit the area you live in, that isn’t in keeping with your social conscience and belief in fairness for all. We are the party to put that into practice: it is no co-incidence that several of our candidates are former Labour Party members.
