Baker is returned

Norman Baker, Lewes' incumbent MP
who was returned - for the fourth time in succession - on May 6, has said that
he welcomes the alliance between the Liberal Democrats (his party) and the
Conservatives. Saying that he was "genuinely overwhelmed by the generosity
and good will shown to me by local people" Mr Baker defended his party's
decision to enter a coalition seemingly believing that it would have been irresponsible
to do otherwise, whether the coalition will weather the storm though is still
to be proven.
Mr Baker gained 26,048 of the vote
(which includes the towns of Seaford, Newhaven and Polegate), with Jason
Sugarman (Conservative) getting 18,401, Hratche Koundarjian (Labour) 2,508,
Peter Charlton (UKIP) 1,728, Susan Murray (Green) 729, David Ronald Lloyd (BNP
- and very much a paper vote, he appeared not have done any canvassing) 594 and
Onderej Souek (Independent) 80.
The majority of candidates
campaigned on the need for road safety, better transport, the need for the need
of a change in the constituency’s name and the on-going issue of West Beach –
so hopefully Mr Baker will be able to address some of these concerns in his new
term.
Has anyone put a punt on when the
next election will be?
