Hi Maisie28
Lewes Green Party has been a supporter of our independent shops for some time now - we've spoken out against the planning permission given to the new supermarket in the town and against the expansion of Lewes Tesco. We're supporters of local businesses for community, social, environmental and economic reasons and one of our Councillors (Susan Murray) is heavily involved with the Lewes Pound too, another scheme to help local businesses.
In fact, support for local businesses ties in with all your concerns: healthy active lives, the South Downs National Park, parking - all of those will help generate a vibrant local economy and will in turn be improved by that vibrancy.
You'll see Patti Broome Reed in our candidate profiles has a wish to pursue better facilities for healthy and active lives, particularly for pensioners if she is elected, something all of us share. Councillors Susan Murray and Roger Murray are also very much involved in Landport Youth Centre, promoting the same, while Matt Kent, one of our candidates for Town and District in Bridge is on the committee of Malling Community Centre, seeking a better future for the centre, including this.
Better parking regulations is something candidates from every party will probably agree with and we can only hope that whoever is elected does what they say they will do. Likewise protecting the natural interests of the South Downs National Park.
Many people will agree that parking regulations of some sort are needed but we think they should be enforced in a more sensitive way, and not run by a big corporation making a profit from us. We think they should be brought in-house or run by a non-for-profit organisation.
I can't answer your question about who you shall vote for, but I'd love you to vote Green. Whichever ward you are in we have excellent candidates. We've also had candidates going to Town Council meetings and sitting in the public gallery, asking questions, for some time now. No other party can say that. I think that shows how much we care - we're not just interested at election time - and we've demonstrated our commitment not just in that but in many other ways too.
May 5th is a real opportunity for change in Lewes - the Green Party wants to be that breath of fresh air in local politics. I hope we're given the chance to represent you.
