Ian White, a councillor at Lewes District Council, has stated that he convicted vows to stay in his post in spite of being convicted for drink-driving.

White was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £440 after he was caught behind the wheel while over the limit in Marine Drive, Seaford, on May 3, a short time before he was elected to his post.

Hundreds of people have added their names to a petition calling for him to resign as leader of Seaford Town Council and he has already been suspended from the Conservative group on the council.

White said: "Having gone to court and made my apologies I felt that this would in some way make amends .

The incident happened less than 35 hours before the polls were opened on election day. How could the electorate have been informed?"

However, Lewes Liberal Democrat's said: "We think it is complete double standards that he was punished in the district group and not the town group."

Speaking for Lewes Conservative Party said they said they ask their district and county councillors to sign up to a code of conduct but that this does not extend to town and parish level.
