On Monday, a Sussex man denied trying to kill his father by smothering his as the latter lay terminally ill at Eastbourne General Hospital in December.

Jurors heard the accused flew into a rage and assaulted a nurse, a security guard and two police officers.

Police had to Taser the man, named as Jonathan Peachey, 48 years-old, in order to restrain him after staff at the facility heard Jonathan telling his 79 years-old father, from behind a curtain, "to just die" and that he would put a pillow over his face.

Peachey, of Eastbourne, had been looking after his father, who had bowel cancer and dementia.

As staff intervened – and patients watched - he chased a nurse from the six-bed ward and allegedly punched him in the head after he tried to intervene, before twice hitting a security guard who tried to drag him from his father's bedside.

Firearms officers attended the scene using the Tasers – against his leg - to calm Mr Peachy during which his is meant o have told the officers "If I had a knife I would have sliced you all up."

He is also believed to have committed one act of affray that night. He denies all charges set against him, apart from that of punching the male nurse.

The case continues.
