People in-and-around Lewes are living longer than in other parts of England and Wales.

An Office of National Statistics report named Lewes as one of the top ten healthy areas to live as the divide in life expectancy grows between the North and the South of England and Wales.

Figures for 2008-10 show that Females born in the Lewes district are expected to live up to 85.1 years compared to a national average of 83.2 years.

Life expectancy was highest in the Kensington and Chelsea area of London and lowest in Glasgow City.

The ONS said: "Although the gaps increased, life expectancy continued to improve in most places. On average life expectancy at birth in local areas improved by 1.2 years for males and 1.0 year for females. At age 65 the average increase was 1.0 year for men and 0.9 years for women."

"The apparent advantage in the London region is likely to be due to a combination of factors, including the relative affluence of many parts of London, the movement into London of healthy, employed individuals at low risk of death, and the statistical effects of migration and high population mobility," the ONS explained.

Crawley was also in the national top ten.
