There was travel chaos for commuters and football fans alike heading down to Falmer from London and further afield on Wednesday.

As Brighton and Hove Albion hosted their biggest game in their new Amex stadium against a feisty Liverpool team in the Carling Cup trains down to Lewes were being delayed between London Victoria and Clapham Junction to allow trains to fast-track it down to the new ground (or rather beguiled commuters were told that they were not being given priority 'because they were already delayed').

Some trains bound for Lewes were delayed for more than half-an-hour to allow those heading for Brighton to pass, so Southern could be expecting to be hit for a(nother) flood of late arrival claims – commuters can claim some monies back for delays of more than 30 minutes.

There were also massive queues at Brighton station with eager fans waiting to travel to the ground.

However, it was not only trains that were hit by the disruption, buses passing on the A27 were also reportedly crawling past the ground.

The match itself finished as a disappointing but respectable 2-1 win for the away team, however the signs for the Sussex side bode well for the future.
