The A27 has been re-opened after being closed both ways after a crash near Middle Farm at Firle on Wednesday.
Sussex Police said four cars were involved in the incident at about 3.30pm.
Seven people were hurt in the crash.
A Honda Jazz saloon travelling east was in collision with a Vauxhall Insignia and a Skoda Fabia travelling west. The Insignia collided with an eastbound Mazda 5 saloon. The busy road was closed in both directions until 11.30pm as a result, leading to traffic chaos and gridlock in Lewes.
Two people are still in hospital; an 80-year old Eastbourne man driving the Honda was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital with serious chest injuries, and his 72-year old female rear seat passenger, also from Eastbourne, was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious injuries which are currently assessed as life threatening.
The Insignia driver, a 55-year old Horsham man, was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for slight neck injuries. The Mazda driver, a 60-year old St Leonards man, was treated at Eastbourne District Hospital for minor injuries, and the 47-year old woman driving the Fabia was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for minor injuries.
An 83-year old female passenger from Eastbourne in the Honda was treated at Eastbourne District Hospital for minor injuries, and a 74-year old male passenger from Eastbourne, also in the Honda, was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for minor injuries.
Sergeant Alan Spicer of Sussex Police's Road Policing Unit said: "We thank those drivers who waited patiently in long traffic queues while emergency services dealt with this incident."
South East Coast Ambulance Service has sent seven ambulance crews.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Enslow.
Comments
I am slightly annoyed the way the press is saying that the insignia and the fabria collided with the elderly couple in the Jazz. Well Of course we hit him as he was on our side of the road. I am the 47 year old driver from the Fabria and take it from someone there on the scene the Jazz just pulled out on to our side of the road both myself and the insignia had our lights on so why Couldn't the old Man see us? I am campaigning that all elderly get re-tested and if not fit to drive have their licences and vehicles removed.
